Using Technology to Save Lives

The National Kidney Registry

Taoti’s mission-critical web application lets the NKR pair living kidney donors with recipients in the first national kidney matching system of its kind.

Overview

Taoti Creative joined with Garet Hil, founder of the National Kidney Registry (NKR) after he experienced his daughter’s kidney failure at age 10.  Taoti Creative helped Hil develop an online system that used complex computations to match those in need of a kidney with ‘paired exchange’ donors.  The scope expanded, allowing for major transplant centers across the nation to upload their donor and recipient information, in an effort to expand the total poll of potential matches far beyond what any given transplant center could provide on its own.

Solution

  1. A custom web application that allows for donors, recipients, transplant centers and the NKR staff to interact with each other to create an accurate profile of each potential paired exchange group
  2. A robust reporting and control area for centers and NKR administrators to manage their individual users, as well as stay on top of various workflow processes
  3. An extranet application that allows individual users (donors and recipients) to log in to see and manage their profile and status within the system
  4. HIPAA compliant, secure data processing that allows for users and hospitals to interact safely

Results

  • The NKR system saves lives by facilitating more transplants with better matches than any transplant center could do on its own

  • The registry has been successful at leveraging their new online presence to raise awareness about its mission and program, while also using their custom application as the nerve center for everything they do.
